Coal LLC puts you in control of a miner working out of a small cabin in a heavily forested area, with the central pressure coming from a horizontal timer bar sitting at the top of the screen. That bar dictates everything — you have a limited window to gather resources as you dig deeper through the planet’s layers, and once it runs out, your current tool simply explodes, ending that attempt regardless of how close you’d gotten.

Movement is simple by design: arrow keys handle horizontal movement, and the miner digs downward automatically whenever you’re not actively moving sideways. That automatic descent keeps the pace brisk, since there’s no separate “dig” button slowing down the core loop.

Chopping Trees to Build Better Tools

Before the descent even starts in earnest, the forested area around the cabin serves a real purpose — chopping trees there provides the wood needed to craft tools further down. Pickaxes, drills, bombs, and other equipment all draw from this same resource pool, which makes the opening minutes above ground almost as important as the mining itself, despite feeling like a slower-paced prelude by comparison.
